Roofing Materials Part 2: Wood vs. Tile

Roofing Materials Part 2: Wood vs. Tile

Wood Roof

A Wood shake roof can last an average of 40-60 years. The material is usually red cedar and used for residential buildings. Wood roof protects from wind, rain, sun, snow, hail pretty well. However, the cost of wood roofing is high. Prices per square foot range between $400 and $700. Other pros to wood roof is the natural beauty and eco-friendly. Cons are the high cost, and they require regular maintenance. One of the big maintenance factors is keeping rot and moss from growing on a wood roof.

Tile Shingles

Tile shingles can last on average 50-80 years, but many tile roofing lasts even longer. They are good against fire, hail, snow, and rain. Materials for tile roofs are clay, cement, or polymer sand. Tile roofs are used on both residential and commercial buildings, especially for a nice historic style. Cost for tile shingles is high. Ranging from $300 to $700 with installation fees between $10000 and $14000. Some other pros are recyclable materials, elegant and historic look, long lasting, relatively easy to replace, rot resistant, eco-friendly. Cons are the high cost, heavy, and install is rather complex.

Roofing Materials Part 1: Asphalt vs. Metal

Roof Materials Part 1: Asphalt vs. Metal

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles have an average lifespan of 30 years, and are the most widely used shingles for roofing. Cost for asphalt shingles is between $80 and $100 per square foot and an installation fee or labor of $1700-$8400. They are fair at protecting your roof against fire, snow, hail, cold, and rain. These shingles are generally used on residential buildings as well as garages and sheds.

Other pros for asphalt shingles are they are easy to install, there are a variety of color options, rather easy to repair and low maintenance. Asphalt shingles come with a few cons however.

Some cons are they provide moderate protection, not eco-friendly, and not the best at resisting wind and rain damage. In addition, any impact from heavy items such as tree limbs and large hail can break the granules of the asphalt and cause leaks.

Metal Roof

A metal roof can last 50 years on average. Cost is high for metal roofs. Generally between $110 to $1000 per square foot, with an installation fee between $2000 and $15,000. Prices depend widely on the metal type and roof design. They are good at protecting your roof from fire, rain, hail, snow, and wind. The metal used for roofs now comes in shingle form, not just the large sheets. Material used for metal roofs can be steel, aluminum, and copper. Metal roofs are used for both residential and commercial buildings.

Other pros for metal roofs are durability, lightweight, long-lasting, and texture options.

There are a few cons to metal roofs. Leaks can happen from punctures or tears, sometimes noise is loud from rain and hail, and they may dent, scratch or fade over time.

Prepare Your Family and Home for a Roof Install

Prepare Your Family and Home for Roof Install

Kids and Pets

Construction noises may increase anxiety or disturb sleep for pets and children. In addition, work zones are extremely unsafe for pets and children. Explain to your kids that some areas will be off limits while the roof is being replaced or repaired.

Relocate your Vehicles

Roofing contractors will need quick access to their vehicles for tools and materials to get the job completed as soon as possible. Move your vehicles so they can park as close to your home as possible.

Remove Wall Decorations

Play it safe. Remove decorative fixtures hanging on your walls, or even light fixtures (such as chandeliers). Vibrations from hammers and machinery installing your roof may cause them to fall or crack.

Cover Belongings in the Attic

If you store items in your attic, you may want to cover them with sheets to avoid any dust or debris that may filter down during a roof replacement or repair.

Move Grills and Patio Furniture

Move grills, patio furniture, potted plants, or other outdoor items at a safe distance from the work zone. Also, covering these items with a tarp will help keep them free of debris or dust.

Identify Several Accessible Power Outlets

Tell the contractors where all the exterior outlets are, they will utilize most of them for tools.

Remove Antennas or Satellite Dishes

If you have any antennas or satellite dishes located on, or very near your roof, you may need to have them removed for the duration of the roofing project. Call your cable or satellite provider to make arrangements before roof work begins.

Be Extra Aware of your Surroundings During Construction

Construction at your home will create safety hazards. Extension cords and other construction equipment will be in the way, possibly below peripheral vision. Stay alert during this time to prevent injuries.

K&P Exteriors strives to make roof replacement as stress-free and seamless as possible.

Call us at (303) 853-0072 for a roof inspection and estimate for your home exterior needs!
