K&P Exteriors Team Members Participate in Vinyl Training

Training Partnership – February 2020

Vinyl Siding Quarterly Training

K&P Exteriors, in partnership with Ply Gem, a vinyl siding manufacturer, had a quarterly vinyl training seminar in February 2020. There was a great turnout. Around 30 of K&P Exteriors vinyl siding installers took part in the training. For most of the participants, it was a nice refresher on proper install techniques, and industry specific tips from a manufacturer approved trainer. For other participants, it was a chance to learn new techniques and gain inside knowledge to help them become better installers. Most of K&P Exteriors’ on-site supervisors attended the training as well.

The Topics discussed during the training were:

-proper install techniques for bi to siding and all it a accessories

-how to prepare the walls and working surfaces before installing siding

-how to account for extreme hot and cold temperatures when installing

-how to properly remove and reinstall siding to perform repairs

Continuing education and training opportunities are very important for working professionals. K&P Exteriors is dedicated to providing training to its team members in order to increase trade knowledge, and keep quality workers. Also, such training programs bring all employees to a higher level so they all have similar skills and knowledge. Siding Types for Your Home

Exterior Siding Options

There are many different types of materials to use on the exteriors of your home. The primary ones used in Colorado are Wood, Vinyl, stucco, metal, brick, stone, and cement. Here is a quick rundown of those types of materials for home exteriors.

Wood Siding

On average, wood siding lasts up to 20 years. There are many placement choices for wood siding such as log, board and batten, shingles, clapboards, wood sheet siding, and vertical boards. Imitation wood siding is also an available material for siding homes. Some pros to wood siding is that it is relatively quick and easy to install, impact resistant, very customizable (stains and paint), and holds a natural beauty for your home. Cons to wood is the maintenance. Wood is susceptible to termites, woodpeckers, and rot. In addition, wood is not fire resistant.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is by far the most widely used. Vinyl is a synthetic material that is available in a large variety of colors and different forms such as: shakes, vertical panels, shingles, horizontal panels, fish scales, designs, and lap. Vinyl can be made to look like other more natural materials such as stone and wood. The big pros to choosing vinyl siding are its low maintenance, customization, and durability. On average, vinyl siding lasts 20 to 40 years. Cons are extreme weather changes can cause damage such as cracks, rot, mold, and discoloration.

Stucco Siding

Stucco siding can last more than 50 years. It is a mixture of cement, lime and/or sand. It insulates the home very well, saving on heating and cooling costs. However, stucco does not generally do well in areas with excess moisture.

Metal Siding

Warranties for metal siding actual extend to 40 years usually because of how durable metal is. The pros to metal siding are: super low maintenance, not prone to pest attack, does not tent to warp or buckle, retains color, fire resistant, keeps cool, and does not rot or mold. Some cons are: the price (most expensive), does not help with retaining heat, may rust if not finished properly.

Brick and Stone Siding

Brick and stone siding can last for decades, over 100 years. They give a beautiful rustic look to your home and is very low maintenance. They are fire resistant and does not fade or decay even in extreme weather. Installation is costly and labor intensive.

Concrete Siding

Concrete is made from a mixture of cement, gravel, sand, and water. This siding option is very expensive, yet will last hundreds of years with very little maintenance. Various designs can be molded for custom homes. Concrete siding is fire resistant and insulating for cool and heat. It also withstands extreme weather.

Drones Being Used in the Construction Industry

Drone in Flight (free stock photo)

Professional Use of Drones

In recent years, many industries have started using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, to capture data about projects and see what is happening on a job site remotely. Construction managers can spend less time traveling from job site to job site. Instead, a drone can travel quickly and give insight on current construction projects. Drones help track and communicate real time progress of the project, track materials and assets, reduce theft, improve visibility and safety.

Prior to a project being started, a drone can be used to help in the bidding process. Equipped with cameras and geo-location sensors, a drone can scan and import survey data for better bidding. The survey data a drone captures can help in more accurate understanding of the area to be built on, and therefore, the cost of the project.

During construction, drones can more quickly and effectively survey the work being done, the crews on the site, the materials being used, etc. this data can help improve on work schedules, keep the project on track and within budget, and reduce theft of materials. Such documentation can also be valuable in case of problems. Finally, drone images of projects can be used to show customers real time progress of construction projects.

Drone Regulations

Something to consider, since drone use is relatively new and booming, is to keep in mind government regulations for drone use. Regulations from commercial and private drone use are continuously evolving. The Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, is the authority on UAV use. Be sure to double and triple check rules for drone use if your company uses drones for data collection.

Types of Roof Vents

Types of Vents for Your Home

There are many different types of vents for your home. Venting out air from your attic is extremely important. See our other blog post Roofing Ventilation. Here is a simple rundown of vent types.

Static Vents

These types of vents passively allow moisture and hot air to leave your attic. Static vents do not move or make noise. They can be placed mostly anywhere on your roof. In addition, static vents come in many different styles, colors, and sizes. Homeowners can choose different types of static roof vents to maximize the air flow efficiency in your attic. The most common types of static vents are: Box vent, Ridge vent, Cupola vent, Off ridge vent, and Soffit vent.

Moving Vents

Moving vents actively remove hot air and moisture from your roof by using wind power to operate. The most common type of moving roof vent is the wind turbine. Wind turbine vents are rather large so that they can catch wind to move effectively. Unfortunately, moving vents such as the wind turbine can make noises while they work. However, new technology and materials for wind powered vents are being developed to address this issue.

Electric Vents

Just like their name suggests, Electric Vents use electricity from your home to operate. Electric vents are a good option if you live in a very hot area or a very high moisture. Always hire a professional to install electric vents to ensure proper instillation, safety, insurance, and even rebate guidelines. The most common electric vent is the typical Power Vent.

Solar Power used to operate electric vents

An electric vent may be the best option for many homeowners. However, the extra electric bill is not ideal. Consider then powering electric vents with solar! Power vents now have specifically sized solar panels. The solar panels sit on the roof with the vents. Always seek professional assistance for solar technology options and installation!

Quick Guide: When is it Time to Replace Your Exteriors?

Some damage to your home exteriors are obvious, such as leaks in your roof or walls. However, here are some less obvious signs of damage to your home exteriors that should not be ignored.

On the Roof

If you notice curling shingles, excessive dark patches, missing shingles, leaks, paint or glue bubbling around your gutters, or rotting eves on are around your roof, it may be time to repair or replace your roof!

On the Siding

If you notice any cracks, curling, soft and rotten patches, or any form of discoloration in your siding, it may be time for repair or replacement of siding materials. Siding typically lasts for up to 30 years when it’s taken care of. It is recommended you repaint your siding every 7-15 years to help extend the life of your siding material.
