Parts of a Roof – Quick Guide

The roof of your home is fairly complex. Many of us homeowners probably don’t think beyond shingle cover, gutters and attic support. However, your roof has many various features and layers. Here is a quick list of roof parts, all of which are important for the integrity of the roof to last.

  • Ridge board: horizontal timber or metal resting at the peak of the roof. Rafters are connected to the ridge board creating the roof framework.
  • Solid decking: made to resemble real wood, placed as the basic roof cover and enclosing the attic.
  • Felt underlayment: a waterproofing layer made of felt. Stacked on top of the solid decking. Roof shingles are placed over the felt layer.
  • Shingles: the roof cover that protects against the elements. Made from various materials such as slate, wood, flagstone, plastic, and/or metal.
  • Vent pipe flashing: external part of vent that prevents water seeping.
  • Chimney and chimney flashing: the chimney ventilates smoke and combustion gas. The flashing is the waterproof seal at the roof and chimney connection.
  • Collar beam: horizontal beam connecting rafters that intersect.
  • Rafter: diagonal parts that meet at the apex to support weight of roof
  • Valley flashing and valley underlayment: waterproofing layers that prevent leaks.
  • Spaced sheathing: refers to the installation of the flat panels.
  • Fascia: the sheath covering the ends of rafters.
  • Lookout: horizontal joists. Support.
  • Gutter: duct for water to move away from roof.
  • Downspout: the part of gutter that transports rainwater towards the ground on side of house.
  • Splash block: the part after downspout that transports water away from the house.

Coronavirus Precautions

Coronavirus Precautions

COVID-19 is upon us. K&P Exterior’s management is continually monitoring the situation and taking steps to follow the recommendations of the CDC and state dictated guidelines for closures and limited contact. Our top two priorities right now are to protect our team members and customers, as well as, continue our building operations and repairs as best we can. At this time, the main K&P Exteriors office is closed. However, phone calls and emails are forwarded to field managers for emergencies. In addition, please note that no K&P Exteriors team member will be entering homes for attic inspections at this time. This is to keep person to person contact as minimal as possible and keep people safe.

Currently, the CDC recommends these simple steps to prevent getting sick: clean your hands often with soap and water, avoid touching your face, and avoid close contact with people (within 6 feet), especially if they are sick. When soap and water are not readily available, sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol should be used. Clean all surfaces at home and work often.

CDC scientists discovered the virus is spread mainly person to person, primarily through droplets. By droplets they mean those produced when a sick person coughs or sneezes. If you are sick, the CDC proposes: stay home, use a face mask, cover coughs and sneezes, and clean frequently touched surfaces with disinfectant!

For more information, visit the CDC official website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/prevention.html. Also, continually check your local county webpages for more restrictions and outbreak news in your area due to the virus spread!

If you have home exterior concerns, K&P Exteriors is still available for emergency needs!

ROOF DAMAGE QUICK FACTS

Roof Damage Quick Facts!

It may be time to repair or replace your roof if you notice these signs:

*Loose, Cracked or Rotting Shingles: The biggest cause for roof leaks. If your roof is older, you may see signs of cracking or rotting in the shingles. Also, shingles may come loose and go missing. A weakened outer layer will expose your home to the elements, which wears on the under layers and eventually cause leaks to form. If your roof is in such a condition, you need to have it inspected.

*Loose Nails: Apart from roofing shingles, roofing nails can sometimes back out. This leaves small holes that water can easily penetrate, and leave your shingles unstable. Such little holes are typically unnoticeable to an untrained eye, however, a good roofing inspector is trained to see the signs of nails backing out.

*Damaged or Dislodged Flashing: Flashing is a piece of metal that protects the areas of your roof where it meets a vertical surface (i.e. walls). If flashing is damaged or dislodged by strong winds, this could leave those areas of the roof exposed. A perfect way for rainwater to get in.

*Cracked Rubber Boots: Plumbing vents and anything that protrudes from the roof require a rubber “boot,” which works like flashing by protecting the area where it meets the roof. Continued exposure to outside conditions will eventually crack or dislodge the rubber boot.

Catching these issues early help you prevent bigger repair expenses or even a premature roof replacement! Are you seeing these signs on your roof?

QUICK FACTS – SIGNS IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR SIDING

Quick Facts: Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Siding

Here are a few easily identifiable signs that it may be time to replace some, or all, of your home’s siding!

Siding in General

If you notice any of these signs in your siding, have your home exteriors inspected before further damage is caused!

  • cracks, warping, curling, gaps, bubbles,
  • soft and/or rotten patches,
  • discoloration, frequent fading, and/or peeling in your siding color,
  • fungus, mold,
  • higher energy bills
  • peeling paint or loose wallpaper inside the home

These signs mean it may be time for repair or replacement of siding materials. When taken care of, home siding typically lasts for up to 30 years. It is recommended you repaint your siding every 7-15 years to help extend the life of your siding material.

Vinyl Siding Material

Vinyl siding is a bit different than other siding, though it is becoming more and more popular as an exterior material for homes. All general siding signs apply, in addition to:

  • holes,
  • drastically different colors on different sides of house,
  • cracking, hanging loose, gaps

Lifetime of vinyl siding is typically 20 years.

And, of course, if you see any leaks, get your exteriors inspected ASAP.

Exterior Colors Trend and Wear – Colorado

K&P Exteriors – Exterior Colors Trend and Wear in Colorado

Exterior paint color tends to last between 3 to 5 years. Depending factors are: where you live, climate and weather, and the previous paint job. Stains usually need to be redone every 4 years. Interestingly, some sources say paint on vinyl can last up to 20 years. However, bright sun can fade exterior colors within 10 to 15 years. Colorado is one of the sunniest states in America, with an average of 300 sunny days a year!

Color trends in previous years in Colorado were to choose neutrals that fade well such as beiges, tans, lighter greys, and some blues. New construction in Colorado today is straying from that norm. Darker color schemes can be seen all along the Colorado Front Range, as well as bright reds, blues, and greens. Though these darker and vibrant colors start out very appealing, the wear on them is more noticeable very quickly. The darker greys, blues, reds, and greens that fit so nicely with the natural beauty of the Colorado Front Range, are more susceptible to UV rays, making them dull and fade faster than neutrals.  Homeowners with such colors then, will need to repaint more often. Yet, strides are being made by paint making companies, such as Sherwin Williams and Behr, to find paint mixtures that resist fading.

K&P Exteriors provides roofing and siding services to the majority of the Colorado Front Range. We deliver uncompromising customer service that has made us a trusted name in the roofing industry. K&P Exteriors has provided many years of roofing and siding services in Colorado, with thousands of satisfied customers.
